SHARK MARKET – ADEN, YEMEN

During a recent visit to Aden on the south coast of Yemen I visited a fish market that in fact turned out to consist predominantly of sharks, the largest of which landed just as I arrived. Having had its fins removed the fisherman proceeded to gut his catch to realise that it was in fact, pregnant. Having extracted the dozen or so rather mature baby sharks (still alive and thrashing) he kindly offered me one for 1000 Rial (£3), but I had just eaten so politely declined.

It was quite something!
